ZetaMarker PC


Install

ZetaMarker is fully compatible with Chromium-based browsers such as Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Opera, and Brave. To install it, simply visit the ZetaMarker listing in the Chrome Web Store. Follow the instruction to add ZetaMarker on your browser.

Pin

To quickly access ZetaMarker, it's recommended to pin ZetaMarker to your browser. Click the puzzle icon on the top right of your browser. This will open a drop-down of all your Chrome Extensions. From here simply click the little pin icon next to ZetaMarker to pin to your browser.

Activate

ZetaMarker prioritizes your privacy with a permission-free approach, empowering you with control over which pages it accesses. To activate ZetaMarker on a page, simply click the ZetaMarker icon located in your browser toolbar or use the ALT+Shift+I shortcut. You can customize the shortcut key by accessing the settings within ZetaMarker sidebar.

Local files

To enable the highlighting and annotation of local PDF files, or PDF files downloaded to your local machine, it's essential to grant ZetaMarker access to file URLs. Here's a quick guide on how to do it:

  • 1️⃣ Open your browser's Extensions page.
  • 2️⃣ Find ZetaMarker and click 'Details.'
  • 3️⃣ Toggle on 'Allow access to file URLs.'

To annotate your PDF file, open it with the browser extension where ZetaMarker is installed (right-click on the file and select "Open with" your browser, e.g., your Chrome). Next, click the ZetaMarker icon in the browser to activate it for your PDF file, similar to how you would for web pages.

Toolbars

ZetaMarer offers two toolbar options: the floating Toolbar and the fully-featured Sidebar. The floating Toolbar, our default option, features essential action buttons and can be easily dragged across the screen or hidden according to your preferences. To access additional features, users can effortlessly switch to the fully-featured Sidebar by clicking on its icon within the Minimal Toolbar, conveniently located on the left side. Conversely, users can close the Sidebar to reveal the Minimal Toolbar. Customization options allow you to set your preferred default toolbar in the settings.

Login

While having an account is not required to use ZetaMarker, advanced features such as synchronization and access to our web app necessitate signing in. The login option is accessible via our toolbars. Clicking the login button will prompt a modal page to open in your tab. You can either use your ZetaMarker email address and password or conveniently sign in with your Google account using the 'Continue with Google' option.

You only need to log in once per browser. Your session will remain active until you choose to log out. When logging out, it's important to note that you'll need to use the same account to log in again for continued access to your data and settings.This is important for data security, ensuring that your work and synced pages are protected from unauthorized access.

Highlight

Select a section of text to trigger the annotation tool. To highlight, hover over the higlighter icon and choose a color. To add a comment, click on the comment icon. A comment box will appear where you can enter your comment.

For quicker highlighting, try the quick highlighter feature. When activated, your cursor turns into a highlighter icon. Drag it over text to highlight with a pre-selected color. You can change the color in the side panel. Activate it through the toolbar (Minimal toolbar or sidebar) or with ALT+Shift+H.

Update

Click on an annotated text to edit it. To change the highlight color, hover over the icon and select a new color. Use the delete icon to remove annotations. To add or edit comment, select the comment icon from the annotation tool.

Update via sidebar

Highlighted or annotated text appears instantly in the Sidebar. It's a convenient way to view and update your annotations. To access the sidebar, click the sidebar icon on the Minimal toolbar. To update an annotation, hover over it in the list to reveal action tools for color change, comment update, or deletion. Clicking an annotation in the list focuses on it in the page, particularly useful for navigating long articles.

Export

In the side panel or Minimal toolbar, you have the option to export annotations from the current tab in various formats, including HTML, Markdown, PDF, or TXT. To initiate the export process, simply click the "Export" option and select your preferred format.

Sync

Synchronization stores your new annotations securely in the ZetaMarker cloud database and retrieves previously saved annotations, ensuring seamless access across all your devices. To enable synchronization, simply log in through the Sidebar or Minimal Toolbar, or use the ALT+Shift+S shortcut.

Please note: Based on user feedback, we are excited to announce that real-time synchronization will be implemented in the next release of ZetaMarker PC. With real-time synchronization, any changes you make will be immediately mirrored across all your devices, eliminating the need for manual updates.

Pages & Search

Access a comprehensive list of pages you've worked on by selecting the "Pages" option in the toolbars. This feature is available in both the Minimal toolbar and sidebar. When selected, a new tab will display the list of pages, enabling you to view and manage them efficiently. Utilize the powerful search functionality to find specific pages based on comments, highlights, page titles, or URLs.

For each page listed, two action buttons are provided: 'Sync' and 'Delete'. Clicking 'Sync' will synchronize your annotations with the cloud database, ensuring seamless access across devices. Alternatively, clicking 'Delete' will remove the page from your local device.

To fetch pages worked on using other devices, click the 'Retrieve Pages from Cloud' button. Remember to retrieve annotations for each fetched page separately after retrieving them from the cloud database.

Theme

The default theme of ZetaMarker is the dark theme, which includes our toolbars, annotation tools, and the pages tab. However, you have the option to personalize your experience by choosing between dark and light themes. You can easily switch between themes using the options available in our toolbars. Additionally, you can customize the default theme via the settings, which are accessible through the sidebar.

Access to Web App

With the current version of the ZetaMarker App, you can access and manage your synced pages without the need for ZetaMarker extensions (ZetaMarker PC or ZetaMarker Lite). This enables you to Review your annotations, Export them, Update and delete them, and Search through them anywhere, anytime.

In future releases of our web app, we will provide more exciting features to enhance your research productivity.

To access the web app via the ZetaMarker PC extension, simply hit the App icon on the toolbars. If you're already signed in via the extension, you can immediately use the web app. Otherwise, you will need to sign in via the web app to gain access to your synced pages.

Settings

To customize default settings in ZetaMarker, click on the settings icon in the sidebar. Here, you can select your preferred default toolbar, choosing between the minimal toolbar and fully-featured sidebar. Set the default color for the highlighter cursor and adjust the default theme from the default dark color. Additionally, customization extends to shortcuts, allowing you to personalize default ZetaMarker shortcuts according to your workflow.

ZetaMarker Lite


Install

ZetaMarker Lite, formerly known as ZetaMarker Android, is the streamlined counterpart of ZetaMarker designed specifically for touch screen devices and Android platforms. ZetaMarker Lite is fully compatible with Chromium-based browsers (e.g., Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera) and Kiwi browser in Android devices. Kiwi Browser is a web browser for mobile devices, specifically designed for the Android operating system. It's known for its speed, privacy features, and support for various web extensions. To Install ZetaMarker Lite on Android devices follow the following instructions.

  • 1️⃣ Install Kiwi Browser: Head to the Google Play Store on your smartphone. Search for "Kiwi Browser" and install it on your device.
  • 2️⃣ Open Kiwi Browser: Launch the Kiwi browser on your Android device.
  • 3️⃣ Add ZetaMarker Lite: Visit ZetaMarker Lite listing on the Chrome Web Store using the Kiwi browser. Follow the on-screen instructions to add ZetaMarker Lite to your browser.

ZetaMarker Lite focuses on the essentials, omitting PDF support to align with the limitations of mobile browsers on Android devices. If you want to highlight on PDF files, install ZetaMarker PC on your PC.

Toolbar

The ZetaMarker toolbar, injected into each visited webpage, enhances user interaction with three primary buttons at the top level: "Pages," "Sync," and "More." Users can effortlessly drag and hide the toolbar according to their preference. The "Pages" button opens a dedicated tab for exploring highlighted and annotated pages, allowing retrieval of synced content from the cloud. Clicking "Sync" ensures seamless synchronization of annotations with our cloud storage. Under the "More" menu, users find three additional action buttons – "Web App" opens the ZetaMarker web app in a new tab, "Export" facilitates exporting annotations in TXT format, and "Login/Logout" manages user authentication. This intuitive toolbar provides quick access to essential functions, enhancing the overall ZetaMarker experience.

Highlight

Select a section of text to trigger the annotation tool. To highlight, hover over the higlighter icon and chose a color. To add a comment, click on the comment icon. A comment box will appear where you can enter your comment.

Update

Simply tap on an annotated text to trigger the annotation tool. From there, you can modify the color, delete, or revise the comment as needed.

Export

In the toolbar, you can export annotations from the current tab in TXT format. To start the export process, click the 'Export' option in the 'More' menu.

Sync

Synchronization stores your new annotations in the ZetaMarker cloud database and retrieves previously saved annotations. Enjoy seamlessly syncing your notes across all devices. Simply log in to enable synchronization through the Sidebar or Minimal Toolbar or use the ALT+Shift+S shortcut.

Pages & Search
